Kyung Jeon-Miranda’s watercolor and gouache painting envisions the superhero La Borinqueña soaring over La Perla in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Inspired by the aesthetics of Japan’s Endo Period, the piece makes a powerful political statement on the lingering devastation of Hurricane Maria. Blue-tarped roofs scattered across the community reference the temporary coverings that, in some areas, remain to this day. Below, a dark surface emerges from the shore, symbolizing the ongoing struggle and resilience of Puerto Rico’s reconstruction efforts.
