"Since the beginning of time, special individuals have been compelled to create objects that seemingly have no function or purpose. Whether channeling the spirits, communicating with higher forces, wrestling with demons, defining themselves, appeasing the Gods or working through their own inner thoughts and passions, creation has been their only motivation, the work their only reward.

From this concept, the Obsessions Collective was founded and curated by New York composer John Zorn, himself an eclectic art collector. Zorn has made a second career of befriending and encouraging many young up-and-coming artists around the world. Created in 2010, Obsessions Collective functions as a support system for artists who, with some exceptions, have not yet found gallery representation but who are dedicated to making art, and who are compelled to do what they do. Honest, passionate, imaginative and technically proficient, these artists work independently and around the established art scene, without the support or assistance from patrons or grants."

Cavin-Morris Gallery is pleased to work with John Zorn on exposing the Obsessions Collective; work that goes from introspective to hard-core in range. In reality, it is a collective of individual visions and paths united by the keen interest and eye of John Zorn himself.

Outside Art Fair nyc

I always love going to the Outsider Art Fair for inspiration, more so than going to galleries, museums and other art fairs.
I went to see the fair this weekend from February 11-13, 2011.

This time I found this little treasure. The artist, unknown except that he/she was a patient at a mental hospital, produced a beautiful little collection of drawings.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

These are delicious:
Oatmeal Raisin Cookie (makes about 12 cookies)

Butter: 8 tbsp (1 stick)

Brown Sugar: 1 cup

Sugar: 1/4 cup

Eggs: 1 egg

Milk: 1/8 cup

Vanilla: 1 tsp

Flour: 1 cup

Baking Soda: 3/4 tsp

Salt: 1/2 tsp

Oatmeal: 1 heaping cup

Raisins: 1 cup

1. Cream butter, brown sugar and sugar until light

2. Combine wet ingredients and beat into butter mixture

3. Combine flour, baking soda and salt and beat into mixture until just blended

4. Add oatmeal and raisins until just blended

Bake at 350 degrees until golden brown. approx 10 min or less.

I have been really looking forward to seeing the play RED about the painter Mark Rothko. Performed at the John Golden Theatre, Alfred Molino is amazing as color field painter Rothko. He is abrasive, argumentative, difficult, angry, depressed, but brilliant.

James Hyde at the Pierogi's funky new space in Williamsburg called The Boiler. There is a huge old boiler still there in the space. James' new work includes huge billboard size prints of detailed photographs of Stuart Davis' paintings in which he paints on with geometric shapes.

I met Johnston Foster in 2003 when we both attended the Skowhegan artist residency program. I've always been fascinated at how Johnston can create really cool sculptures out of found objects.

In this piece, titled The Keeper, at RARE's new space, http://www.rare-gallery.com, he uses:
Plastic traffic barrels, bicycles spokes, garden hose, plastic cutting board, plastic table cloths, rubber, PVC, glass, wire, plastic ties, hot glue, screws.

BIG BAMBOO Starn Twins at the Met

Went to the Met's rooftop in NYC to see the Big Bamboo installation by the Starn Twins. We didn't sign up for the tour, but saw a few people up high in the bamboo walking around. It was a really hot and humid day in New York, so the idea of going back downstairs just to sign a waiver and wait around for the tour didn't sound appealing...but the installation was really great.
