KYUNG JEON
DELICATE DIVISION
NOVEMBER 10 - DECEMBER 9, 2007
OPENING RECEPTION: NOV 10, 5-8PM
Teo+Namfah Gallery presents Delicate Division, an exhibition of new paintings on rice paper and canvas by Kyung Jeon, running from November 10 December 9, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, November 10th, from 5-8pm.
Known for painting her endearing child characters into surprising narratives of physical trauma and sexual deviancy, Kyung Jeon, in her latest exhibition Delicate Division, softens into the more subtle dramas and pleasures of the human condition. These pieces immerse gorgeously idealized little boys and girls into the realities of adult life and relationships; the resulting contrasts stand as powerful expressions of romantic longing, personified fear, and the delicate nature of love and desire.
Inside graceful borders and amid intricate detail, Jeon’s imaginings live in charming dream worlds of pleasing colors and the calming patterns of traditional Korean blankets and patchwork pojagi. The young characters contained within display a reality-based range of expression and action, however from dark and violent, to mischievous and suppressed, to downright pure and sweet. In this world, thoughts are visible and internal pain bleeds red; these paintings celebrate the joys of love and culture, and bemoan the culture of repression, anxiety, and social expectations.
Kyung Jeon was born in 1975 in Jersey City, New Jersey, and received an MFA in 2005 from the School of Visual Arts, NY. She was selected to participate in the biannual ARTSPECTRUM 2006 exhibition at the Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art in Seoul, Korea. She has been included in exhibitions in Korea, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, California, Las Vegas and New York. She lives and works in New York.
